Adelina Chalmers a.k.a. The Geek Whisperer

The name "Geek Whisperer" came from someone who observed me in 2012 working with engineers and said: "I have never seen anyone connect with engineers like this. It's like you are a geek whisperer." I loved the name, but I did not take it on until years later because I worried it might sound patronising. After I spoke to countless engineers and scientists with whom I worked and asked their opinion over several years, the vast majority (93%) said they loved the name and found it quirky, so I decided to take it on.

Why do I do what I do?

"If this country was run by engineers, it would be a much better place, but us geeks are often not good at influencing people" - said my (chemical engineer) mum to me as I was growing up.

I felt a very strong sense of injustice that exceptionally bright people are often not also the ones making the decisions.

Unfortunately, geeks and non-geeks often clash not because they disagree, but because they speak very different languages. If they don’t figure each other out, they end up at cross-purposes. This is a disaster, not just for them, but for all of us.

I believe the only people who can improve people's lives and save the world from climate catastrophe are engineers and scientists. I want to change the world one engineer or scientist at a time. Their inventions and technology impact our lives every day. I want to do everything I can to help awesome, brilliant people with awesome brilliant solutions succeed! In order to succeed, they need to be able to collaborate with others. There's no question about that.
